I was about to bite into a beignet, those delectable, deep-fried pastries that are icons of the New Orleans culinary scene, when my guide on the Bienville Bites Food Tour stopped me.
“Wait! You forgot the lemon.” Lemon? Who puts lemon on a beignet?
Residents of Mobile, Alabama, do, and that’s where this food tour took place. To my surprise, the citrus juice melded with the powdered sugar on the warm pastry, forming a delicious, gooey icing. Sorry, New Orleans, but this beignet from Panini Pete’s was the best I’ve ever had…

Cruise Line Focused on All-U.S. Itineraries to Join Growing Great Lakes Cruising Industry
A cruise line focused on U.S. destinations will join the growing Great Lakes cruising industry in 2026, adding three all-domestic itineraries. In response to guest demand, American Cruise Lines’ new ship, American Patriot, will sail lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan and Ontario from May to August 2026 with 9- and 14-day itineraries.

Tour guide Bella Myers on Friday led a group of passengers from the American Cruise Lines’ American Symphony through downtown. They got a little history.
“Like we talked about before, this is the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception,” she said as the cruisers walked up Dauphin Street. “It was originally built in – they laid the cornerstone in 1835.”
And they ate a lot of food – signature offerings from five Mobile restaurants, plus a final treat from Three Georges Fine Southern Chocolates.
