The Mighty Mississippi is one of the longest and most storied waterways in America. Cruises on the river offer a unique vantage point from which to experience the history and culture of the country’s heartland.

American Cruise Lines operates five ships on the Mississippi River, which include two paddlewheelers, American Splendor and American Heritage, along with three modern river boats: American Melody, American Symphony, and American Serenade. The company offers eight river cruises on the Mississippi and four cruises that further explore its tributaries on the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee rivers.

Our Seldon Summer Skedaddle (as we like to call it), had us driving up to Quebec City for a big city fix, spending three weeks exploring three different provinces of Canada (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia) and then boarding the new 100-passenger Coastal Cat, American Liberty,  for a 7-night American Cruise Lines New England Islands cruise, sailing roundtrip from Providence, Rhode Island.

I took a river cruise because it was on my mom's bucket list. We spent a lot of time together, so we did some serious bonding. The small ship was good for my 86-year-old mom's mobility.
