History of Amelia Island

Amelia Island has flown the flags of eight different nations—more than any other place in the U.S.—earning it the name “Isle of Eight Flags.” Its earliest known residents were the Timucua people, followed by centuries of colonial tug-of-war between the French, Spanish, British, and Americans. The island takes its name from Princess Amelia, daughter of King George II. Its location made it a hotbed for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries, with nearly 300 vessels once crowding the harbor. In 1817, pirate Luis Aury briefly claimed the island in the name of Mexico before being ousted by U.S. forces. Amelia Island also played a strategic role during the Civil War.
